Writing Tips to Make Your Story Shine! | by Linda Herron

Updated: May 21, 2023

Everyone has a story to tell, and writing is an excellent way to express yourself. Whether you're planning on writing a book, a blog post, or just drafting a personal essay, these tips will help you improve your writing and make your story shine!

Read Good Books

Reading books written by talented authors can help give you insight into the craft of writing. This can help you learn how to develop compelling storylines, create interesting characters, and craft sentences in ways that engage readers. Reading is also helpful for sparking ideas for future projects. Take notes when reading to keep track of what works well and why it works so well. This could be something like an unexpected twist in the plot or something as simple as creative word choice.

Know Your Audience

Knowing who you are writing for is critical to crafting your story. Consider your audience's age range, interests, language preferences, and other factors before starting your project. For example, if you are writing a children's book, consider adding illustrations or using more straightforward language than writing an academic paper or business report. Knowing your audience will also help you find the most effective ways to reach them through storytelling elements, such as dialogue or themes and motifs.

Edit Carefully

Editing is often one of the most overlooked steps for creating splendid work, but it's one of the essential steps in improving your writing skills. Editing includes more than just checking for spelling mistakes; it's about ensuring each sentence reads and reflects what you want to say. Careful editing will also ensure that there are no grammar issues or typos, which can detract from the overall quality of your work and might cause readers confusion due to misinterpreted information. If possible, have someone else review your work for any errors you have missed during editing sessions, as another set of eyes can catch any issues you overlooked.

Writing can be challenging, but with practice and dedication (and some helpful tips!), anyone can become an amazing writer! Reading books written by experienced authors, considering who will read your work, and taking time to edit are all important steps to improve your written skill set. So get out there and start crafting those stories! Have fun!
